In the article, "Should Everyone Get a Trophy?" by Lauren Tarshis, she talked about how kids get a trophy just for showing up to team practices. Our school system decided more than a decade ago to pass kids on to the next grade regardless of how successful they were on their report card. Do you think kids should fail?
I don’t think kids should get to move up grades. If you don’t fail kids they won’t be smart enough. Failing them won’t be hurting their social skills. Lastly you are teaching them the wrong idea by not failing them. If they don’t deserve to move up a grade why do you let them?
People say kids should get to move up a grade because that’s the kids they've been growing up with. I don’t think that should be the reason. Most classes are split grades so they most likely know the kids in the younger grade. It also won’t hurt their social skills because they will be talking to people they've never talked to before, there will also be people they know very good. That is why it will not affect their social skills.
Some kids aren't smart enough to keep moving up grades. There are some kids who fail over half of their subjects and keep moving up grades when they don’t deserve to. In this case kids won’t know what they have to know in that grade, so when they get into the higher grades and a teacher refers to what they learnt in that grade the kid will have no clue what they are talking about. Also a benefit of of repeating a grade is that you will learn stuff over again. Some kids simply don’t get the work they are told to do, those kids can get help from a teacher of another classmate. At some point after repeating a grade for a year or two the teachers will address that you simply can’t do the work, if they do they will see if you have a learning disability. These are the reasons why.
Not holding them back is teaching them the wrong lesson. Its showing them that doing the bare minimum asked is fine, that doing stuff sloppily with no effort will get them through life. In life you should try your hardest in every task you get, but that’s not how these kids are going to think. As a kid it’s showing me that if i don’t try my hardest that it doesn't matter. I don’t think that’s right.
These are some of my reasons why I think kids should get held back. First they should know the stuff they have to before they can move up a grade. Second It won’t hurt their social skills, it will improve them. Lastly its showing them a bunch of wrong lessons. That is why I strongly agree that kids should get held back.
